An introdution to
EOBD
These pages are best
veiwed with netscape and monitor set at 1024 X 768
EOBD is the next generation
of onboard control system diagnostics used in Automotive applications ,all
road going cars and light petrol derived trucks manufactured after Model
Year 2000 must comply with this new standard.
EOBD stands
for European on-board diagnostics
OBD1 stands
for generation 1 on-board diagnostics
OBD2 stands
for generation 2 on-board diagnostics
However there are 2 parts
to this standard :-
1.The first is a true
standard and is called generic (this applies to all manufactures)
2.The second is what
is termed manufacture specific (this means that it only applies to
only one particular make, e.g. ford but
not vauxhall).
so in theory the second
is (non standard) but it is standard to all cars of a specific make.
just in case you wonder
what ECOtec stands for it is this:-
Emission
Consumption Optimization technology
This topic was chosen
because i feel people should be made aware of the increase
in complexity of modern
day engine control systems.
having said that this
type of standard applies to most microprocessor control systems used on
vehicles today not just engine control.
Content
as the name suggests an insight into system control (located
on this server)
this link will take you off server to crypton technolgy
to find a more compleat overview of EOBD
back on this server again a list of trouble codes to be found at
gm.com
another page on this server this time trying to show the
difference between OBD1 and EOBD in laymans terms
time to go back to crypton this time to look at test gear(equipment)
to use when interrogating the control system look out for scan tools
off this server again looking at more diagnostic tools again you
need to be looking for scan tools
this to my knowledge is the is the only uk based message board
for the motor trade setup by peter warmin
this is a worldwide system dedicated to the motor trade, i sponsor
this one and i use it quite a lot to sort out some of my american
car problems if you need help with one with description of fault
type of system
vin and milage
contact me
another tools site off this server once more as EOBD is so new
these indipendant tools manufactures are working hard to get scan tools
available for the non franchise workshops
The society of Automotive Engineers this is where these so called
standards are born.
This is the national body representing individuals (not companys
)
grades of membership are A.M.IMI
M.IMI F.IMI
there is also the affiliate grade awarded to colledge students.
M.IMI is awarded to managers
F.IMI is awarded to upper managment(MD etc)
A.M.IMI is awarded to the technician level
this is a similar institute but applies to all aspects of
engineering
